He was always looking for a way to make more money, and he took pride in that fact.</p><p>He showed up early, stayed late, learned new skills, and chased every chance to increase his paycheck. He even worked side jobs to make more money, often sacrificing sleep and a social life. He felt driven to prove himself by making his way on his own. When his pay increased, he felt hopeful. <em>&#8220;Now I&#8217;m getting ahead,&#8221;</em> he told himself.</p><p>But somehow, he never did.</p><p>No matter how much more he earned, his bank account always seemed empty. Each month ended the same way: worry, stress, and the quiet fear that one bad surprise could knock him off his feet.</p><p>Aaron thought the problem was income. <em>&#8220;If I could just make more money,&#8221;</em> he said, <em>&#8220;everything would be fine.&#8221;</em></p><p>One evening, after another long day, Aaron sat at his kitchen table staring at his bills. His uncle, who had learned many life lessons over the years, happened to stop by. After listening quietly, he walked Aaron outside to the gardening shed and pulled out an old weathered wooden bucket.</p><p>&#8220;Take a look at this old bucket, now let me ask you, if I turned on the garden hose and pour water into this, will it ever fill? Does it matter if I pour in the water fast or slow?&#8221;</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!YhoK!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2bb2d87d-c585-4cbb-b30d-d7063881db57_784x1168.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!YhoK!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2bb2d87d-c585-4cbb-b30d-d7063881db57_784x1168.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!YhoK!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2bb2d87d-c585-4cbb-b30d-d7063881db57_784x1168.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!YhoK!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2bb2d87d-c585-4cbb-b30d-d7063881db57_784x1168.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!YhoK!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2bb2d87d-c585-4cbb-b30d-d7063881db57_784x1168.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!YhoK!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2bb2d87d-c585-4cbb-b30d-d7063881db57_784x1168.jpeg" width="784" height="1168" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/2bb2d87d-c585-4cbb-b30d-d7063881db57_784x1168.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:1168,&quot;width&quot;:784,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:89844,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://jeffkellick.substack.com/i/181469980?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2bb2d87d-c585-4cbb-b30d-d7063881db57_784x1168.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!YhoK!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2bb2d87d-c585-4cbb-b30d-d7063881db57_784x1168.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!YhoK!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2bb2d87d-c585-4cbb-b30d-d7063881db57_784x1168.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!YhoK!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2bb2d87d-c585-4cbb-b30d-d7063881db57_784x1168.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!YhoK!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2bb2d87d-c585-4cbb-b30d-d7063881db57_784x1168.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>Aaron frowned.<br>&#8220;No, it will keep coming out the sides and the bottom&#8221; he said.</p><p>&#8220;Exactly,&#8221; his uncle replied.</p><p>Aaron looked confused at the obvious statement.</p><p>The uncle pointed back to the kitchen where Aaron&#8217;s bills were, &#8220;My boy, you&#8217;ve been carrying a leaking bucket.&#8221;</p><p>Aaron began to look more closely at his spending. He noticed how often he bought things to feel better <em>now</em> &#8212; meals he didn&#8217;t plan for, gas for extra side trips, gadgets he didn&#8217;t need, small comforts that added up. Each purchase felt harmless or minor, but together they drained him.</p><p>He learned that money, like the water in the bucket, had <strong>two paths</strong>:</p><ul><li><p>What comes <strong>in</strong> (income)</p></li><li><p>What flows <strong>out</strong> (expenses)</p></li></ul><p>He realized that working harder only controlled one of those paths. The other path, what flows out, also needs hard work. Work to evaluate, to think, and question exactly what to spend his hard-earned money on.</p><p>One winter morning, his car wouldn&#8217;t start. The repair cost more than he had saved. Aaron realized that unexpected costs weren&#8217;t rare accidents &#8212; they were <em>guaranteed visitors</em>.</p><p>With that Aaron also began to understand <strong>time preference</strong> &#8212; though he didn&#8217;t call it that at first. He simply noticed a pattern:</p><ul><li><p>Spend now, feel good briefly, struggle later</p></li><li><p>Save now, feel a little discomfort, gain peace later</p></li></ul><p>Every choice was a trade. A new phone today, or a safer future tomorrow. Neither choice was bad &#8212; but they led to very different outcomes.</p><p>From that day on, Aaron stopped trying to win money by force. He focused instead on balance.</p><p>He still worked hard. But he also learned to patch the holes in his bucket. He planned his spending. He saved for repairs before they happened. He learned to wait before buying things he wanted but didn&#8217;t need.</p><p>His life didn&#8217;t become flashy, but it became steady.</p><p>And for the first time, Aaron felt rich in the way that mattered most:<br>not because he had more, but because he was prepared.</p><div><hr></div><p>Then life taught him another lesson.</p><p>One evening, tired and frustrated, Aaron sat at his kitchen table while his uncle washed a mug at the sink.</p><p>&#8220;You know,&#8221; his uncle said, holding up that same bucket with a crack in the side, &#8220;you can pour water into this all day, but it won&#8217;t stay full.&#8221;</p><p>Aaron nodded. &#8220;Yes, uncle you showed me that. I understand.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;That&#8217;s expenses,&#8221; his uncle continued. &#8220;If you don&#8217;t manage them, no amount of income will save you.&#8221;</p><p>Aaron had already begun patching the leaks in his accounts. He tracked his spending, cut back on small habits that added up, and learned to wait before buying things he wanted but didn&#8217;t need. Slowly, he stopped losing money without knowing where it went.</p><p>But other problems arose. The gas to drive to work increased, insurance went up, and groceries cost more than they had the year before.</p><p>Even when he saved a little, it didn&#8217;t seem to go very far. Prices rose. Fuel costs climbed. Food cost more than last year.</p><p>His uncle explained,</p><p>&#8220;This is the problem of inflation. It means money slowly loses buying power. Over time, the same dollar buys less.&#8221;</p><p>Aaron frowned. &#8220;So saving is useless?&#8221;</p><p>His uncle smiled, put down the bucket and brought out a cup.</p><div work, at dodging effort, at pretending not to hear when he was called. When other children ran and laughed together, he lingered in corners, building walls in his mind. He told himself he was different &#8212; that he didn&#8217;t belong, that it was safer not to try.</p><p>Years passed that way, and as he grew into a young man, the excuses grew with him. He drifted from job to job, never for long. Each failure became proof that the world had cheated him. Each mistake was another reason to stop trying. He learned to speak in sighs and wear disappointment like a shield.</p><p>Then one gray morning, Eli woke before dawn and realized he was afraid &#8212; not of anything that might happen, but of <em>nothing happening at all.</em> He looked at his reflection in the window and saw not a villain, not a hero, just a man who had been standing still while life moved on.</p><p>He thought, <em>&#8220;I&#8217;ve wasted my chance. I&#8217;ve ruined everything.&#8221;</em><br>And for a while, he believed it.</p><p>But then, quietly, another thought came: <em>&#8220;If I&#8217;m still here, there must still be choices left.&#8221;</em></p><p>That day, Eli decided to make one small choice &#8212; not a grand one, not a promise to become great &#8212; just a better choice than yesterday. He helped his uncle carry wood. He cleaned the porch without being asked. He stopped blaming the world long enough to notice how the sun looked through the morning fog.</p><p>The next day he made another small choice. Then another.</p><p>Weeks became months, and though his life did not suddenly become easy, it became <em>his.</em> He began to see that each day offered two paths: one that led deeper into bitterness, and one that led toward something brighter, even if only by an inch.</p><p>He also saw that he was not as helpless as he had believed. He had his strength, his hands, his mind. He was not sick or broken. His family still offered food and a place to sleep &#8212; not because he deserved it, but because they cared. And that, too, was a kind of grace.</p><p>Eli realized that he could never go back and fix the years he had wasted. But every sunrise was a new beginning, a quiet mercy.</p><p>He began to think of life as a path with no map &#8212; only turns. Some led to regret, others to renewal. Each step mattered, but none were final until the day he stopped walking.</p><p>And so, each morning, before leaving his small room, Eli would whisper to himself:</p><blockquote><p>&#8220;Today, I can make it worse, or I can make it better.&#8221;</p></blockquote><p>Some days he failed. Many days he succeeded.<br>But from then on, every choice was made with open eyes.</p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>Moral</strong></h3><blockquote><p>Every day offers new choices &#8212; choices that can make your life, and the lives around you, better or worse. You cannot change the past, but you can direct the future. No matter how many wrong turns you&#8217;ve taken, you can still choose a better path today.</p></blockquote><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://jeffkellick.substack.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Consequential Actions!
